The BQ24780 BQ24780S 24780 are both battery charger controller ICs used on laptop motherboards to efficiently charge multi-cell Li-ion batteries, typically supporting 2 to 4 cells. The main difference is that the BQ24780S is an upgraded version designed for modern laptops, featuring support for Intel’s PROCHOT# thermal management signal, which helps prevent overheating by allowing the CPU to communicate with the charger to reduce power when needed. The older BQ24780 lacks this feature and is better suited for simpler or older laptop models without advanced thermal coordination. Both chips use synchronous buck conversion and SMBus communication, but if you are working with newer Intel-based laptops, the BQ24780S is usually the recommended choice due to its enhanced safety and power management capabilities.
